Kate sighed, look up through the canopy of browning leaves above them, "Well maybe not driftwood, but I wanna see it, you know? I'm fed up of living in such a close minded little world. I've never been more than ten miles away from home!" She started kicking at the fallen leaves and walking around in vague circles. It had to be mid-afternoon by now. If she wasn't back soon her father would kick up a stink and she could do without that.
"Whatever would steal my shoes, it would be better than living around here!" she complained once more, light heartedly though, he was joking with her, she could do smiles and graces. turning back around to face him, she smiled, "Shoes or no shoes. It's still better than here." sighing once again and turning back following the path back to Knighton, he was right, she needed to be getting back or her father would blow his top.
A shiver ran down her spine. She rubbed her hands up and down her arms in an attempt to warm them slightly. A bitter chill was rising. "You're right, I should be getting back. He'll be starting to wonder where I am," she said, somewhat bitterly, chewing on the inside of her lip.
