Roe offered Tom a seat at the table as they came in. Roe thought that Tom was a bit full of himself, but at least he wasn’t shy about talking about what was the most important to him, which just happened to be Tom. It wasn’t that he was vain, because unless you were a monk, you tended to be vain to some degree, no matter who you were. He knew that Tom was very protective of himself. He hoped that would not mean that Tom would abandon his friends and family if he saw too much danger to himself. “I am glad you don’t look at me as evil, but in truth, each of us has a view of themselves which is quite independent of what others think. I know what I have done, and that’s how I judge myself, good or bad.”
‘’ My brother was a man who was very set in his ways and old fashioned. I am sure he would not have looked for me and there would have been no chance of him apologizing’’.
Ron recognized that Tom’s view of his brother was never going to change. “At least you know where you stood with him though, even if you found it difficult to agree with him very. He provided for the needs of many in the community and it seems that you agree that they did a good job in raising their 2 sons. Its just that the breach between the 2 of you was just too wide to be overcome, and both of you would have had to have been wiling to close the rift and you weren’t …. end of story. “I’m quite all right given my situation with women,” he laughed. I’ve reached the point where such things are not of the same interest as when I was younger.”[/i]
If I should ever see Luke again, then I will tell him not to do something so stupid. I think the discipline will do him good. It sounds like something Dan would do, but that is what the boy is used to so maybe it will work. If not, then I will just leave the matter there. It would be better for Luke and me to just get along as opposed to having a poor relationship.’’
Roe just shook his head. “The way he reacted was very understandable. He felt that his space, his personal space, was being violated by an intruder, an invader. It was not that his parents had lost the house. They had both died, so as far as he was concerned it should have not passed to anyone except family. I think I might have reacted similarly. You might find a need to have a talk to him, so he doesn’t react impulsively with the wrong person in the future, however, I don’t think he did so much that was wrong.”
‘’ We will speak no more of it then’’. “That sounds like a wise course of action.” Tom could have little idea of what actually happened back then. How he had kmown this village girl for years and had ended up loving her. How they had gone to far and she had become pregnant. How he had asked her father for her hand in marriage and had been accepted. However, the Earl still thought of him as having noble blood and would not permit him to marry her and the huge argument they had had. He had decided on that day that he could no longer lived in the manor house, and he had waited until the boy was born and healthy, before going off to the Crusades. On that day, in front of the Earl, the boy that he had been had died, replaced with a much colder individual who found it an easier thing to kill in the Crusades as a result. So, exactly, what kind of person was he now. The Earl was gone, but young Robin still inhabited these woods. Roe wondered if he would ever run across him. Roe decided that Robin’s life would be taken before he would have a chance to re-introduce himself. That unfortunately was the nature of life.
Roe listened to Tom’s complements about the work that he had done. “Thank you, it is progressing slowly, but it is progressing. If you wish to take your boots off you may, but don’t feel obliged. There is about in the small keg on the counter, but for more drink we will have to go into town to one of the traditional establishments,” he laughed. “If we do that, I will go a bit more heavily armed,” he pointed to some of the weapons on the wall. I don’t trust some of the locals …. Too many are in the employ of the Sheriff I fear. Well … I expect you don’t need many directions …. You can go on a self-directed tour I would imagine,” he laughed.
