About your Character
Name: Emi Hayashi
Nickname: Em, Emma, less savoury terms.
Age: 26
Country: Of birth - Japan. Of residence - England.
Position: Slave
Job: Menial worker/Spoils of war
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Black
Height: 5' 3"
General Appearance:
Emi is fairly short compared to Westeners, as is the norm for her kinsmen. She finds it easy to weave in and out of crowds thanks to this, provided someone isn't looking for her - otherwise she sticks out like a sore thumb. Her hair is black, a rarity in this part of the world, and so she gets some strange looks from the women, as if it's her fault that she looks a bit odd. She has very rounded features, and gives the sense of being delicate due to her constantly submissive posture and her small stature. When she's alone, she has a constant, small, sad smile as she thinks about her family and home, but when other people are around she tries for a neutral expression.
Emi's head is almost constantly lowered in respect, for fear of being singled out or beaten up. She moves quickly and quietly, still unused to the clothes she wears in England, but quite liking them. Her hair has grown longer than she would like it, due to her being unable to communicate so well with the English, and it now reaches past her shoulders. She tends to tie it up with whatever comes to hand, just so it doesn't get in the way and it makes it difficult for crueller people to yank on it.

Personality:
Emi is a naturally quick learner, and as such she's managed to pick up a fair bit of the native language in her short stay so far in England, and she is fast to understand what it is her current task is. She believes she should do everything to the best of her ability, not because she fears her master but because she simply gets annoyed with herself if she isn't sure that she's given it everything she has. She ends up feeling unworthy of anything if she fails at that.
While not the most outgoing person prior to her slavery, since her capture she's become a lot more nervous and shy around people, partly as a defence mechanism. Foul treatment from most of the people she meets in this country has led her to become withdrawn, and while she had been a little bit private in her previous life, she is now very secretive and dislikes revealing more about herself than is necessary – not usually a problem, as a lot of people won't talk to her anyway.
Emi is a little bit of a daydreamer, and who can blame her? She hadn't been born into a life of slavery and she still likes to imagine that she could escape and find her sister and uncle in the strange country she was snatched from. She is, however, too scared to actually just run away and while she occasionally steals a few coins, hoarding them in the hopes that she will find a chance to leg it and pay her way back to the Holy Land, she's aware that it probably won't happen.
Emi finds it difficult to see anything outside of black and white. If she thinks what she is doing is the right thing, then that is it, and she finds it hard to understand someone else's point of view on that matter. This is partly why she takes the treatment of her and the other slaves so badly – she can't fathom why they treat them like that. Unlike the other slaves, she just tends to withdraw – what's the point in provoking them to make it worse? If she eventually finds someone she feels she can trust, she will give to them unconditionally and not expect anything in return, but she's yet to find someone like that. After all, who would take any interest in a slave...?
Family:
Background:
Born in Kyoto, Emi was a reasonably quiet child and a model daughter, the fourth child of Midori and Yuu Hayashi. Yuu was a physician to the Minamoto clan and embroiled deep in their politics, privy to their most secret councils as their families had been allies for generations. As such, the family was fairly well respected, but not extremely well off – they mostly relied on the kindness of the Minamotos and how much they would pay Yuu. Apart from the occasional mishap, as children are prone to, Emi had a normal childhood, learning what she needed to become a good wife and occasionally helping her father out with the preparation of medicines and such. Emi spent more time with her sisters than her brothers, who had allied themselves with Minamoto and were often off with his armies, practising their skills and preparing for the tyrant's future plans.
However, when the Gempei War started, Yuu started to worry for the safety of his family. He was unsure if the Minamotos would win the feud and, eventually, the title of Shogun, and he didn't really want to stick around to face the consequences if the family did indeed lose. It took over a year to collect together what he needed, and to make arrangements, but by 1184, he was prepared and, in the middle of the night, he and the family stole away to try and escape to Korea in order to avoid the war. Unfortunately, Minamoto discovered their plans and, outraged by such treachery and cowardice, sent a small group of his soldiers to dispatch the family for the last time. Both of Emi's brothers died fending them off to allow the rest of the family to escape in the small ship procured by Yuu.
Unfortunately, Yuu's plan didn't account for the insanity that was Minamoto and the man sent the soldiers back after them, demanding that the blood be spilled from every last one of them in order to satisfy him and his honour. No longer safe in Korea, the Hayashis ventured through China and the lands that would be known as India, Pakistan, Iraq and Jordan, never once feeling even remotely safe in the course of the two years it took them. Midori, Emi's mother, died as they travelled through China from a fever, and had to be buried by the wayside as quickly as possible.
Eventually, the remaining family found themselves on the outskirts of Israel and encountered Crusaders who had overshot Jerusalem. The Crusaders, thinking them to be Saracens, took the family for prisoners and slaves to be sent home. Her uncle and little sister escaped. Her father and eldest sister, Ren, died on the journey to England, and now she is all alone.
Emi was sold at auction to Lord Sebastian Mannering and has found herself stuck there ever since, unable to escape from the chains binding her, and she spends a lot of her time wishing that she could simply return to Israel to find her family – not that she knows exactly where that is, or where she was captured. She was dragged to Nottingham as part of his entourage and has no idea what to expect for her future.
Anything else: I actually researched that Minamoto stuff. It's insane...
