About your Character
Name: Gavin Bates
Nickname: Gav, Batey, Roper
Age: 25
Country: England
Position:(Outlaw, King's man, Sheriff's man, etc…) Outlaw (but not the good kind!)
Job: Pickpocket, Outlaw
Eye Color: Blue
Hair Color: Black
Height:5’ 10”
General Appearance:(Minimum of two paragraphs, please)
Gavin is a slightly short, stocky (and reasonably) young man with a near constantly grubby look about him, even when he’s clean (which he rarely is). He walks with a slight stoop, the sign of many years working the bellows-sleeve of his master’s forge. His strides are wide, long, but carefully measured and he rarely puts a foot out of place. He has dank, limp, black hair that reaches just above his ears (when he lets it get too long) and stubble covers his chin as he despises trying to get all the food out of his beard. He has watery blue eyes, weak and constantly darting around as if looking for the nearest escape, just in case. His skin is quite pale, although one would probably expect him to be darkened, living out in the sun all the time – living under the great canvas created by Sherwood’s trees in the depths of the forest, he doesn’t often see that much sunlight.
His clothes are a badly cared for and often too small bunch of fabrics, thrown on for warmth and practicality rather than any sense of fashion. He runs around in a-few-inches-too-short trousers, simple top and a long-sleeved overcoat he stole from a farmer during a particularly horrible winter. His overlarge boots, taken from a noble many years ago, manage to cover up the muck-covered ankles he ends up showing off in his trousers. A slightly blunt long-sword hangs from his side.
Likes:
- Money
- Stealing
- Good food
- Women
- Making a nuisance of himself
- Winding up his companions
Dislikes:
- Robin’s gang
- The Sheriff
- Anyone with more money than him
- Not being well known
Personality:(Minimum of two paragraphs, please)
Gavin is your typical outlaw – and not in the same sense as Robin’s gang. He cares only for himself (and, when he has to, his gang) and wouldn’t be bothered if he had to choose between his own life and that of his companions – he’s out for number one. He’s greedy, power hungry, controlling, sneaky, manipulative – all admirable qualities for his line of not-so-honest work. He likes to surround himself with people who aren’t as intelligent because he can control them and lead them, although he knows he isn’t the swiftest arrow in the quiver, so to speak. Unfortunately, he’s better off with Hanton (for the moment). He enjoys his fighting, provided he wins, and he plays dirty. He loves a good gamble.
He has a very addictive personality – if he gets the feel for something, he’ll carry on until he has to choose between that and death. His last stint (a foray into the world of dog fighting) nearly cost him his head. He also can’t back down from a challenge – if you dare provoke him, he’ll carry on trying till he proves you wrong and kicks your arse. He knows his own mind, and tends to make up his mind about someone quite quickly – then again, his definitions of people include “Robin’s men”, “someone to steal from” and “guard”, so it’s not exactly difficult.
Despite all this, he isn’t stupid. He knows when he’s going to be beaten, and while he doesn’t like to back down, he will if he really must. He knows how to pick and choose battles and knows when a situation can be used to his own ends. He has pretty much no morals to speak of, and that’s just fine with him; how can an outlaw have morals, anyway? An outlaw is a dead man.
He’s not religious, but he is superstitious. He was outlawed for killing a priest as he made his way to Nottingham, merely for a few coins. He wasn’t bothered by this – what had God ever done for him? He does prefer to let others do the work if he can possibly make sure he doesn’t get into trouble – why go to the effort of killing someone if you don’t have anything to prove? He’s not particularly powerful but his intelligence and speed make up for it.
Family:
- Carl Bates (father, 49)
- Samantha Bates (mother, 38)
- Deborah Smith (sister, 28)
- Barbara Bates (sister, 20)
- Alison Bates (sister, 15)
- Neil Bates (brother, 11)
He hasn’t seen any of his family in about 6 years.
Background:(Minimum of two paragraphs, please)
Gavin was born in Underwood, a reasonably happy child, until he got a little older and found himself surrounded by siblings. He didn’t like to share, and still doesn’t, and often wandered off from home to find somewhere just for him. He daydreamed about being a noble, and owning the lands which his father worked, thinking of how he’d punish his siblings in that manner children do think of their brothers and sisters when they’ve been mean. Unfortunately, his need to be the centre of attention and complete selfishness didn’t earn him any friends to speak of, and he spent a good deal of his childhood watching the other kids play their games, or learning the art of sword making from the local blacksmith. He’d quickly learnt to appreciate the fine art of bladecraft, and as he grew older his love for metal (particularly gold) grew.
He took on an apprenticeship with the blacksmith but it was short lived – despite his love of the job, he was, in the end, a lazy lad with a cunning mind, and often got one of the lads in the village to run his errands or do his chores. The only thing he couldn’t really get out of was working the bellows, and it hurt him, though it built up a fair bit of strength in him.
Impatient and irritated that he had to send all his money to his father in order to look after the household, Gavin packed up and wandered the shire, looking for different work, and even considered the option of moving to London. He had a huge fight with his father about his responsibilities to his family and enraged, his father disowned him. Gavin didn’t care then and hasn’t looked back since.
However, when he was 19, now a homeless young man, he found there was little work he could find with no skills (he’d never been interested in farming land and had ignored his father when he tried to teach him anything). Gavin resorted to stealing and found all his years skulking round Underwood and watching the other children had been beneficial after all – he was a good pickpocket, a fast runner, and quickly made his way up the ladder of the criminal underworld. He slowly lost the few morals his mother had ingrained into him, and he’s now outlawed for killing a priest for a few coins, and he’s not ashamed of this – it usually puts people in awe of him. He currently resides in the depths of Sherwood, working for Hanton and his gang (although he feels he'd be a better leader, he knows better than to challenge it), avoiding Robin and his gang where possible.
Anything else: He really dislikes pretty much everyone.
