About your Character
Name: Jake Platt
Nickname: None, really. His sister once spent a week calling him Tree Face as he managed to walk into one when he was too busy talking to notice it was there.
Age: 19
Country: England
Position:(Outlaw, King's man, Sheriff's man, etc…) Peasant
Job: Whatever it takes to keep him and his sister alive. He's supposed to be farming the lands he inherited after the death of his father, but has taken to petty theft alongside that. He's not very good at it, so it's a miracle he hast been caught. Yet.
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Dark brown
Height: 5'11"
General Appearance:(Minimum of two paragraphs, please) If you just glanced at Jake, you would probably forget his face almost as soon as you'd passed on. Only those who know him really well know the precise meaning of each of his numerous facial expressions. Most of the time, though, he'll be wearing a slight frown and his eyes glazed over whilst his mind is off else where.
His dark hair is a permanent mess, despite his best efforts to sort it out. this is partially the fault of the manual labour he has to do to keep his family afloat, but mainly that of his sister, who likes to ruffle it up on every occasion she gets. It seems to always end up in his eyes, no matter how may times he pushes it out, nor how many times his sister threatens to, and sometimes does, take a knife to it.
Despite what he'd like, years of working on a farm has given him strong muscles, though his frame is still slight. He'd rather he'd gained these muscles from war or, even better, life as an outlaw, but all his secret attempts to use a bow have ended in failure. One such attempt ended with a long scar across his left forearm which, to his intense displeasure, has no symbolic meaning he has yet been able to fathom.
Likes: His sister; practicing with his bow [when no ones looking]; deep, philosophical thoughts; words; dreaming of becoming an outlaw; what today would probably be called communism, though he probably doesn’t realise it.
Dislikes: The sheriff and everything he stands for, bastard; farm work and other such mundane tasks; extreme weather conditions; any man who comes near his sister; the Holy War, but not openly.
Personality:(Minimum of two paragraphs, please)
To those who don’t know him, Jake can seem stand-offish to the point of rude, but this is mainly due to an innate shyness and fear of rejection. He puts up a bit of a front of not needing anyone, but really he'd fall apart without his closest friends, and especially without his sister. She remembers a time when he was all jokes and laughs, but he seems to have become more and more serious over the years. He still lets go sometimes, and can always make her laugh, which he loves doing.
Jake has some fairly strong views when it comes to, well, almost everything. He's soft spoken most of the time, preferring to dwell in his own thoughts, but when he gets riled up, or when there’s someone to talk to, he'll really go off on one. He hates the sheriff and the way the poor are exploited, but at the same time he hates the King for abandoning them, and blames him for the death of his father. After the news came that his father had died, Jake became even more disillusioned with life than he had been before, and began to question whether there even was a god, though his sister's faith increased tenfold.
However, contrary to what it would seem, Jake is not purely made of hate. In fact, the hate makes up a very small part of his personality - most of him is hope. Even though, with the Sheriff on one side and the King on the other, he can’t see much of a future, he’s never stopped hoping. He's constantly dreaming about a time when things will be better, for all poor people. to his slight guilt, though, he can’t help but think there’s more to life than tilling fields and chasing chickens. He's constantly striving to find some greater meaning to his life, but as yet there's been nothing. His mother always said he had sad eyes and minstrel’s hands, but he tried to play a lyre at one of the festivals to celebrate the kings leaving for the holy land, and found himself entirely useless.
Family: Only his sister. His father died in the Holy Land and his mother from consumption.
Background:(Minimum of two paragraphs, please)
Jake was born and grew up in Nettlestone, and has many happy childhood memories of playing round the edge of the woods and in the pond. He's grown up with farm work all his life, helping his parents since he was tall enough to turn the butter churn, but that’s never stopped him dreaming of something more. His father used to work as a manservant to a lord and taught both Jake and his sister to read and write, before going to fight in the Holy Land. When Jake was 16 ,the news of his father’s death reached Nettlestone and changed him forever, and his mother died of the consumption just two weeks ago
For about three months, Jake has been sneaking off on his own to practice with a crude bow he'd spent the two pervious months making. His sister caught him at it about a month ago, but the subject has never been raised between them, mainly because of their mothers worsening illness and eventual death, which is still affecting both of them.
Anything else: His sister's name's Emma, and she's 15. I guess I should have mentioned that before!
