overall personality:
Will won’t speak unless spoken to, and then has something important to say. He tends to evaluate, judge, and make decisions based on whether he feels it is right and how it affects others, whether it be the poor and oppressed, or the members of the gang that surround him. He doesn't like to expose himself emotionally, so he has few close male friends and generally doesn't open himself up to females. He is very protective of his inner space, as well as being physically protective of others. He was affected greatly by the loss of his mother, and the loss of his father's hand, because of his own actions, but does not speak openly of it to others. He is not sure himself if it is because of shame or the desire not to appear to be weak.
He is always the happiest and most contented when he is using his carpentry or building skills for the benefit of others, whether it is ordinary people, or more likely, members of the gang. He is saddened by thoughtless behavior. He is intense, stubborn, and mechanically-gifted. In those few people he places absolute trust in, he is extremely loyal. He therefore has few friends but for those few he is willing to risk much.
Since he feels he is pretty much alone now, he feels that he has to rely on himself and not others. He is distrustful of authority figures and strangers until they prove themselves to him. He does not want to put people close to him in needless jeopardy, and therefore has few that are close to him. He would like to be re-united with his family, but in many ways the gang that he is part of now is his new family. He blames himself, at least indirectly, for his mother's death, but has no one that he can really speak about it with. Will is not very religious, but has an intense understanding of right and wrong, and justice. As far as interest in the opposite sex was concerned, Will believed that he just wasn't that attractive and that his personality wasn't very attuned to building a lasting relationship.
At first meeting him, Will appears to be quiet, reserved, and aloof. He does not speak unless spoken to, and feels he has something important to say. When Will first meets a stranger he will generally offer his hand in greeting and force a smile, but beyond that, unless there is a subject that they have in common, the conversation will trail off, with him being unwilling to allow them to fathom what he is feeling or thinking. Although he tries to betray few emotions he is always polite, trying to reduce tensions, while keeping his guard up.
Once he was well-acquainted with someone there was the greater possibility that he would open up into general conversation, but it was by no means guaranteed. He does have a big smile, when he cares to use it, it’s just that in recent years he had not had much call or opportunity to be happy or show it much.
Will would definitely strike the average person, at least at first glance, as being introverted socially. When he was growing up in the village, his circle of friends was small, as he was basically apprenticed to his father’s carpentry shop. It would later e the same in the forest, in that the number of outlaws in the inner circle were small in number, and Will had learned not to be trusting of a great number.
As far as interest in the opposite sex was concerned, Will believed that he just wasn't that attractive and that his personality wasn't very attuned to building a lasting relationship, and he knew that Marian would forever be Robin's girl. Knowing that, Will tended to keep to his work, and the close circle of friends that he had, without being much inclined to make new ones.

history: Born 1172 - age 22, Will was the oldest of two sons of Dan and Jane Scarlett. The second son, born several years later was named Luke. Curiously, as it turns out, Will was born only about 8 months after Dan and Jane were married. Will was born in the village of Locksley, which was in the domain of the Earl of Huntingdon. Will, until he was forced to go live in the forest, was a life-long resident of he village. Dan, his father, was an expert carpenter, woodworker, and craftsman. Will and Luke learned much of their craft from their father of course.
Additionally, a young ward of the Earl of Huntingdon, by the name of Robert, was put under the tutelage of Dan Scarlett, in the same household as Will. Since Robert was destined not to inherit any property it was deemed that he should learn a trade, in his case, carpentry. He was seven years older than Will, and by the time Robert left his apprenticeship Will would be 10 years old. In many ways Robert served as an older brother to Will as we worked in the shop. He made and carved many small wooden toys for the boys as they grew, which was good practice in his craft for Robert.
When Robert was 17, soon after he left the apprenticeship, he was forced to leave to fight in Europe and in the Holy Lands in the Crusades. Within a few years, Robin, who was destined to become Earl of Huntingdon, left for the Crusades with King Richard. Will had always had a kind of love-hate relationship with Robin. Robin was a few years older, and they had fun playing together, but there was always a distance, caused by their separation in class. Frequently Will felt that some of the advantages that Robin had in life were simply unfair. Soon after Robin left for the Holy Land things got bad relatively quickly.
Sir Guy of Gisbourne, with the support of the Sheriff, took over the estates of the Earl of Huntingdon. Through high taxes and other restrictive practices, the people of Locksley were being slowly starved. Jane, Will's mother, being afraid that her 2 boys weren't getting enough to eat, basically starved herself to death so that she could be sure that they had enough. Not too long after that, the boys tried to poached some game, and Dan, their father, the master craftsman who had built half of the buildings in Locksley, was forced to lose his hand. Will, in many ways, blamed himself for his mother's death, but blamed Robin as well, since Will thought if Robin hadn't left for the Holy Land maybe none of this would have happened.
Soon after Robin returned, Will, Luke and another were caught stealing flour. They were quickly sentenced to death by hanging. Robin and a few others managed to force their escape from the gallows at the last minute and they escaped to Sherwood Forest, where the gang of outlaws was formed. They soon began to steal from the rich and give back to the poor, helping to redistribute the unfair taxes that the Sheriff was levying. Will, along with the rest of the outlaws, played a cat-and-mouse game with the Sheriff of Nottingham, in an attempt to prevent his plans from meeting success.

Will was quite perplexed between his heart and his mind. His primary concern had always been for the safety and care of the poor and common people of both Locksley and the rest of the shire. He had grown up with Robin Hood, and as the son and grandson of the local noble, he as a person, even at his young age, had to be shown a great deal of honor and respect. It had been a long day in the castle. Robin was always someone that everyone could have a good time with, since he had a tendency to treat everyone the same. However, Robin always seemed to have things go his way. For a long time this did not seem that it was a very big deal, and for the most part, everyone in the Earl of Huntingdon’s domain seemed to be well off.
That all changed when a new wave of fighting began in the Holy Land. King Richard began pulling together an army to make its way to the Holy Land to fight. Robin heeded the call of the king and left with his army. This was the beginning of the dark times in Locksley and the shire. Robin was no longer there to oversee his land and to make sure that he people were properly taken care of. Robin’s lands were put under the oversight of Sir Guy of Gisbourne. The situation of the people of Locksley took an almost immediate turn for the worst. Starvation began to take hold with many of the people. In fact, Will’s mother, Jane, stopped eating, herself, so that she was sure that here 2 sons, Will and Luke, had enough to eat. As a result, she ended up starving herself to death. In many ways, Will blamed Robin for this turn of events. If Robin had not gone to the Holy Land with the king, and had been in a position to take care of his people, maybe none of the bad times would have occurred.
However, Robin did return, and ended up saving Will’s life as well. Once more, even though Will was not really happy about it, he was indebted to Robin. At the end of Will’s liberation they were all forced to flee to Sherwood Forest. There began Robin’s campaign to rob from the rich and give back to the poor. There were many successes, but some reverses as well. Since Will’s primary concern was the welfare of the poor and common folk, he became increasingly concerned that they would simply get caught in-between Robin’s gang and the Sheriff’s men, endangering them. Finally, when the camp was overrun and the outlaws nearly captured, Will reasoned that maybe he could make a deal with the Sheriff. He had often looked at things from the perspective of Robin always getting all of the glory, which Will had resented since he was a boy. If the Sheriff could be dealt with, perhaps many lives could be saved. Will decided that it was time to act, without considering that Robin was not working just for himself, but the good of all. He sent word to Sir Guy that he wanted to discuss with him plans for Robin’s attempt to rescue Marian, and that he would need a safe route into the castle for them to meet, as well as a way to leave without being seen. Guy was at least curious about the proposal, and provided an observed entrance into the castle, and they met in a fairly secluded hallway. They had just finished discussing the general outlines of Will’s plan to betray Robin, hen they both heard steps coming around the corner in the hallway. He almost immediately heard the familiar voice of Marian, who he had been jealous of Robin of for years. They had been friendly, but she had had eyes only for Robin, which he understood, given Robin’s position. As a result he had given up any hopes that he had had for her. Guy smiles and waved at her, and began moving down the hallway. She said hello to him as well, but he began to try moving slowly down the hallway after him, so that they could continue their conversation somewhere else.
