Jason Freeman - newbie to Malibu - has recently found out about the town's secret, thanks to his friend Adam Harberts. Quite a few residents are in fact vampires. The ring leader of these being Sienna Devereux. Someone who Jason had a 'fling' with.
Jason's younger sister, Dani, was reluctant to move to Malibu in the first place and has since gone off the rails. Falling in with Belle Guillory and Brad Mayer, two vampires of the more rebellious kind. Dani wants nothing more than to be fully excepted, which means being turned.
And then there's the more enigmatic members of the town. People know very little about Samantha Santiago's past, very few know she's Spanish - she's been away so long she's lost her accent. Then there's Damien Étoile, the mysterious French student who's just arrived. He doesn't exactly go to the school, but he won't tell anyone what his job is. Maxie Hart is the sort of girl who'll be weird because she can. She is the outcast of the vampires, not particularly liking Sienna. Which gets in the way of her feelings - which she denies - for Jason.
