About your Character
Name: Imani Medina
Nickname: Ani
Age: 22
Country: Israel.
Position: Civilian; Neutral.
Job: Professional peasant. ^^ or rather…slave depending on how you look at it. She works in the kitchens at the castle, though unfortunately she’s yet to discover the concept of arsenic.
Eye Color:Brown
Hair Color: Black
Height: 5’4’’
General Appearance: Slender and petite, Imani is exactly what you could expect of a malnourished Saracen. Her skin is naturally dark, and her hair characteristically long, but neither of which are on show where possible. In homage to her religious beliefs, this young arab keeps her skin covered at all times, except for her face and hands, and when she’s very unlikely to come into contact with anyone of a male disposition. Primarily she can be seen wandering around the vicinity of Sherwood in subdued colours like everyone else, but the only major difference seems to be the fact she tries her hardest to keep whatever she’s wearing clean.
On the occasions in which she doesn’t keep herself modestly attired, Imani prefers to leave her hair tied back in a single waist long braid, and opt for shorter sleeves. It’s not exactly warm in England, and as such, she’s had a difficult time coping with the temperature change as it’s drastically different to what she’s used to. The result being that she wears heavier and thicker fabrics where appropriate, and almost always has a needle in the lower seams of whatever she’s wearing in case she needs a sudden ‘quick fix’ as it were.
As a resident slave, she’s more than privvy to a fair few scars and bruises, the most predominant being scars at the ankles and wrists from where she was transported aboard the slave ship. So, in theory the maximum coverage of her skin also warrants as a handy ‘disfigurement’ block, and stops her from showing her battle scars to the world. Almost always seen wearing a smile, she carries most of her real thoughts in her eyes, and they are essentially the easiest place to look, when needing an answer from her.
Likes:
The rare occasions in which she can speak her native tongue
People that understand the concept of basic hygiene
Fruit;; apples mainly
Animals of the small furry variety.
Reading
Stars, since you can see them most of the time.
Dislikes:
Learning English
The lack of a wage.
Public executions.
Being thought of as a lesser human being.
Men – though there are exceptions to this rule.
British Weather. (It’s too cold!)
Personality: In a single word? Unconventional. She’s not exactly what you’d expect from a slave at all. Quiet and calm, she’s got no objections to her work, and while she understands barely anything anyone says to her, she keeps an open mind and attempts to embrace whatever the world throws her way – even if she knows from the tone alone, that things are said at her expense. That doesn’t mean of course that she’s completely submissive, she just prefers to keep her head down and her neck intact.
It’s taken a certain amount of adjustment to life in England, and while she was perfectly accustomed to fighting in the holy land, it seems to have taken a more trivial role here. She disapproves of hanging over petty crimes, and the fact that the nobility is letting it’s people (including her) suffer is something that strikes a nerve. Objections, however, are hard to make, and she’s left just mulling over her own views and becoming distinctly unsociable. Silence, along with patience, is a virtue, and thankfully she has both, but it really is only a matter of time before she does something she’ll likely regret.
Family: Aliyah Sawda (mother, stoned to death for betraying Saladin’s vision) Yosef Aruba (Father, MIA in Mecca)
Background: Born in the city of Medina, Imani was given the name as a blessing to honour her parents and out of respect to Mohammed. Being born in the middle of a raging war, wasn’t necessarily what you could call helpful, but her name brought her good fortune, and even though her mother was killed when she was eight years old, she still found purpose in pursuing a responsible lifestyle. When the invading crusaders arrived in Medina, she fled with her father to Mecca despite it being more heavily challenged than their own home. It was the holy land, it was supposed to protect them.
Somewhere along the lines within the city however, Imani was separated from her father, and captured by one of the leading Britons, along with multiple others of roughly the same age. It wasn’t what you could call a pleasant experience, but since those that stayed in Mecca were either hung, stoned or stabbed, perhaps leaving at the time hadn’t been so bad. Aboard the slave ship to the ‘not-so-appealing other new world’ Imani ran into Djaq, or Saffiya depending on which circles you run in.
They weren’t friends, or anything of the sort, but the fact that there was some sense of camaraderie aboard that boat amongst all of them, made the transition a little easier. Well, until some of said prospective slaves made a run for it. Imani wasn’t in that group, and as such ended up being sold to whoever bid highest, which in this case resulted in her being dumped in Nottingham. She was luckier than some, and her complete disregard for the English language made her a prime candidate for servant duties.
She’d like to say things have changed in the last few years, but they haven’t. She’s still working in the kitchens, and living like a prisoner, but she’s alive, and one step closer to freedom. Now if she could just manage to get someone to speak Arabic, everything’d work out just fine…
Anything else: For the most part, she’s good at what she does. But what she does, isn’t necessarily helpful in England. Fluent in Arabic, she can happily converse with Saracens but is at a bit of a dead loss when it comes to basic communication in English. Thankfully she makes up for the language gap with practical skills of the typical slave variety. Cooking, cleaning, sewing etc. Also, unlikely though she is to utilise this skill, she has basic knowledge of combat skills thanks to growing up in the middle of a war.
