About your Character
Name: Ellen Archer
Nickname: N/A
Age: 21
Country: England
Position: She’s not really versed on the corruption going on, though she’s heard whispers against the King, which she doesn’t really understand. She would likely side with her father for fear of repercussions.
Job: Unfortunately, sitting quiet and appearing happy with her lady of leisure title.
Eye Color: Blue
Hair Color: Blonde
Height: 5ft 6
General Appearance: You hear the blonde hair, blue eyes, and you suppose a cliché sort of beauty. Yes, she’s rather an attractive woman, and she had a fair few suitors in the past, but she is by no means the prettiest young thing to grace the courts of Prince John. Her age, supposedly, was working against her in finding the ‘ideal’ partner, but her father’s words were always the harshest to reach her ears.
She is rather fair-skinned, both by genetics and her environment. Though she loves the outdoors and the freedom in which couples it, her father does not take well with his daughter acting inappropriately; he’s very set in his ways when it comes to what a woman can and can’t do. His opinions reflect in her appearance entirely – from the way she pulls her hair out of her face, to her feminine, though conservative, attire. Luckily, her figure isn’t half bad, but she stands on the side of waif rather than the curvaceous side in which most men prize.
Likes: Reading, especially poetry; crafts, as she’s quite imaginative and resourceful; nature; woodland; animals; the ocean; writing, though she does so in secret; travelling; helping people; being of use; horses, but has yet to learn to ride them; passionate people; powerful speeches; uniqueness and originality; and people that speak their minds.
Dislikes: Her father’s wishes and dominance over her life; her betrothal; arranged marriages, in general; the idea of being without her father; conflict and fighting, though she realises that there are some things worth fighting for; castles – she finds them rather foreboding; being confined in small spaces; extravagant dinners with forced, dull conversation; status and ranks.
Personality: Though she has a mind of her own, and a bountiful of opinions to go with it, they are only voiced in solitude, away from her father and other judgemental ears. She’s a highly strung woman trapped in a body and environment that calls for discipline and understanding of the political climate. Her father, being an adamant social climber, would like to use her to gain further rank in Prince John’s circle, and she is past trying to argue with his means and wishes. In her youth she may have rebelled a little against social acceptance, but she is not silly enough, or reckless enough, to try and do so now. She has learnt a great deal of self-discipline, but it comes from fear, therefore it is entirely circumstantial. It’s very much a love/hate relationship she has with her father, as on one hand she would like nothing more than to break free from his opinions, but on another she can’t imagine what her life would be like without routine and order.
She is someone who has a strong moral compass on what is right and wrong, and there are some issues that really have a profound effect on her. As she’s by no means a fighter, she can’t fight the same way in which a warrior in battle would. Instead, she relies on her other strengths – usually her kindness and intelligence. She’s tries to help those in poverty, usually with food and clothing, but she does not get to help as much as she would like, what with her father’s watchful gaze on her from morning till night. As her betrothal has led her, along with her father, to Prince John’s castle where her betrothed is staying, she believes she can use the opportunity to help those wrongly accused, or sentenced too strongly.
Mostly, she will be described as a good humoured and acceptable young woman. She enjoys the simple things in life and does not crave the status and wealth her father does. Away from her father she can have quite a sharp tongue on her, especially as she is extremely bored with her current surroundings. She wants a passion in her life – a purpose that will make her feel of real use – but she has settled that her only purpose is to aid her father. It’s hard to say how long she’ll be able to keep up such pretences; after all, everyone has their breaking point.
Family:
- Hadrian Archer [father]
- Gloriana Archer [mother] [deceased]
- Francis Chaucer [betrothed]
Background: In some aspects Ellen is supposedly one of the lucky ones, as to be born to wealth in such times of poverty would always give you a head start in life. In other aspects, she was unfortunate enough to lose her mother shortly after being born. To say that neither have had a profound effect on her life would be false, but she’s never considered herself especially lucky and vice-versa. From a young age she was taught the rights and wrongs of society, and the importance of moving or social ladders for more pleasurable conditions. Of course, she didn’t understand a single bit of the logic as a small child, and it wasn’t until her teens that she truly understood her father’s agenda. There are times when she wonders whether her life would have been different with a motherly figure, but then she looks to her father and she realises that he must have just as much control over her mother as he did her.
As soon as she reached the age of eighteen, she was flaunted by her father to any man of high rank or wealth – preferably, both. However, not a single man seemed to reach his expectations, which she took as a blessing in disguise. The idea of being betrothed to someone she didn’t no – or worse, someone her father liked – was a fate she didn’t want to think about. There was a rebellious stage at the beginning of this, but it was soon quenched with threats of him disowning her. She may have hated her circumstances, but she had no where else to run and therefore no chance of bettering her life.
Unfortunately, her father found Francis Chaucer to be a very suitable man. He had rank, wealth, and was in the inner circle of Prince John’s armed guard, but to Ellen he was simply a pompous, arrogant, ruthless man. With no choice but to say agree, she has to face the consequences of a looming wedding to a man she does not, nor could ever, love.
Anything else: If you want me to change the her current location (Prince John’s castle) let me know. I didn’t know whether I would be able to get away with that, or whether it’s even possible :]
